LETTER: Headstones - War Heroes appeal

The Friends of Gainsborough Cemeteries and Chapel have now restored over 50 headstones with inscriptions which remember soldiers from World War One who are buried abroad.

They have also restored a headstone which remembers World War Two RAF officer George Arthur Marrows. The headstone in the cemetery which remembers him was badly broken. The Friends are now planning to restore a further three headstones which remember World War Two casualties and have traced relatives of two of them but they are still hoping to trace relatives of Gunner Peter Stubbs. The kerbs on his grand-parents headstone state:- “Peter Stubbs - Killed at El Alamein, October 23rd, 1942. Aged 20 years.” He was from 85 Lea Road.

Another headstone which the Friends plan to restore dates from the time of the Boer War and remembers Harry Baker, Royal Hussars, from Morton Terrace, who died from wounds in 1902. He is buried in the cemetery.

The Friends also want to find information about Private Uriah Collett, Linconshire Regiment who died in March 1915 and also Wallace Draper, originally from Misterton, who served in the Royal Navy and died in Gainsborough in March 1920.
