Ownership debate over Epworth’s Wesley statue

The life-sized statue was erected in 2003 on Albion Hill, for the tercentenary of Wesley’s birth. It is part of the Epworth Town Trail.

At February’s town council meeting the possibility of changing ownership of the statue from the Wesley Monument Memorial Trust to the town council was discussed.

Chairing the debate, Coun Bob Fish questioned how much insurance would be for the statue, and if trustees at the Old Rectory might be willing to help. Alternatively, the Methodist Council may give support, he suggested.

Coun Ros Whittaker said there is no issue with taking on the statue if the insurance is a nominal amount. It would seem sensible for the town council to assume ownership, she said.

Coun Peter Davies said the statue is a valuable asset, and it would be appropriate for the town council to take it on.

It was agreed to pursue the issue at the next meeting, with the necessary information about insurance to hand.
