Chair-based fitness sessions launched at Louth care home to help prevent falls
A care home in Louth has launched a programme of chair-based exercises to help prevent older people suffering falls.
The Wolds Care Centre, on the outskirts of town at North Holme Road, is a modern, purpose-built home providing high-quality residential, nursing, dementia, respite and end-of-life care in a warm, welcoming environment.
Now the six-week programme is another feather in its cap, enabling residents to improve their strength, balance and confidence.
Manager Michaela Taylor said: “Falls can have a real impact on an older person’s confidence and independence, so we wanted to create something that helps people to keep moving and to feel more secure in their day-to-day lives.

"The first session was well received and it was lovely to see people joining in, encouraging each other and enjoying themselves.
"The exercises are designed to be accessible, so residents can take part at their own level and build their confidence over the course of the six weeks.”
The sessions use gentle chair-based exercises to support mobility and help residents remain active at a pace that suits them.
Those taking part can build strength gradually while also making regular movement part of their weekly or daily routine.

The programme supports The Wolds’s work to boost residents’ health and wellbeing, while also providing an opportunity to spend time with others, enriching their social lives.
Sharon Gaffney, wellbeing practitioner at the home, said: “We want people to feel comfortable taking part, whatever their level of mobility.
"Chair-based exercise is a simple way to keep improving, while the group setting gives residents a chance to enjoy themselves and spend time together.
"We hope people finish each session feeling more confident about what they can do and enjoy making movement a regular part of their week.”

The sessions are also supported by four members of The Wolds staff who are approved falls ambassadors. The Lincolnshire Falls Ambassadors Programme is an initiative aimed at enhancing the management and prevention of falls among older people, hosting workshops and training, and raising awareness.
The Wolds Care Centre is run by the not-for-profit social care provider, the HICA Group, which is based in East Yorkshire.
