Town Crier William Smith stood in the Market Place – fittingly under the Caistor Lion, which commemorates Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

Mr Smith was helped by bell ringer Jude.

A crowd gathered in the Market Place to hear the proclamation, which was read at the same time, 2pm, across the country and the Commonwealth.

A beacon will be lit tonight at 9.45am at The Rock.
