Taken at Winthorpe, the rail sits perpendicular in the frame and draws the viewer into the picture, leading the eye up to the horizon.

The effect is compounded by multiple, converging elements of the photograph: the shadows from the rail created by the morning sun; the edge of the walkway and the nearby fencing, huts, and lighting; the steps leading down the sea; and even the way in which the waves are breaking.

The largely clear sky, meanwhile, finds a match in the largely clear walkway.
