Support in Skegness for Lincolnshire Mayor's decision to block 'tourism tax' amid fears for coastal economies

Holidaymakers in Skegness won’t be hit by the Government’s controversial new ‘tourism tax’ – after the Mayor of Lincolnshire decided not to implement it.

Dame Andrea Jenkyns has received praise from many in the Skegness community – who agree such a tax would have a negative effect on the town’s visitor economy.

Jenkyns, of Reform UK, stressed that she won’t be introducing the levy as she fears it could discourage visitors.

“I do not want to drive out people from visiting our region, so I will not be implementing it,” she said. “People are struggling anyway, so don’t worry, your seaside holidays, the local businesses, I’ve got your back.”

However, Lincoln & District Trades Council is among those to express disappointment at the Mayor’s decision - arguing the county could benefit from the additional investment such a levy could provide.

“The Trades Council believes that Lincolnshire's residents should not be left to shoulder the full cost of maintaining the infrastructure, public services and amenities that support one of the country's major tourism economies,” a spokesperson said.

The Standard asked its readers for their opinions on the debate via social media. The response was overwhelmingly in favour of the Mayor’s decision, with around three quarters of respondents being in agreement.

Those in support expressed outrage at British people being charged to visit other parts of “our own country” and fears most of the levy would go to Lincoln anyway. Others agreed such a tax could put tourists off from visiting - subsequently affecting jobs, businesses and local facilities.

Paul Newnes comments: “People are struggling enough as it is to afford visits to the seaside, this tax might just deter them from coming.”

Mary Davies writes: “People will take their holidays in areas without the stupid extra taxes. Good on Lincolnshire Mayor, it will boost the economy in this area.”

Alan Marshall simply adds: “It will kill Skegness.”

However James Norton was among the few who disagreed with the Mayor’s decision “It works all over Germany,” he writes. “So long as it’s a few pounds and not a percentage, and that it is used to better the local environment. No brainer really.” Andrew Hutchinson adds: “As long as it isn’t all spent on Lincoln, I think it’s a good idea.”
