Parish to buy its own brighter zebra crossing

Parish councillors in Metheringham have opted to buy brighter beacons at a zebra crossing where they have safety concerns.

The council will spend £4,100 on enhanced ‘Zebrite’ beacons at the pedestrian crossing on Lincoln Road.

Coun Nick Byatt said: “The parish councillors were moved to act following many of us witnessing various incidents of drivers ignoring people on the crossing. The B1189 which runs through the village is a very busy road and the primary link for the outlying villages to Lincoln.”

He said recent Speed Indication Device data showed a significantly high number of drivers do not observe the 30mph limit.

The crossing is a primary pedestrian route for the large number of residents living in Shiregate to walk into the heart of the village.

The parish council considered that, while to an acceptable highways standard, there were occasions when the flashing amber lights were just too difficult to see. Although not prepared to buy the new, high visibility beacons, the county council has agreed to fund fitting and maintaining them.

Local county councillor Patricia Bradwell said she understood villagers’ concerns, but officers could not justify the expense of buying new beacons when the others were still seen as fit for purpose. Instead they have reached a sensible solution, she said
