A carved wooden tree measuring about 5ft 6in appeared in the church on Friday morning.

The creation features leaves, blackbirds, a birdhouse, all hand carved and painted, and more mice.

Two weeks ago, The Standard ran an article about the sudden and unexplained appearance of handmade, wooden mice at The Stump.

The paper knew who was responsible for the creations but, on their request, agreed to keep their act anonymous (or anony-mouse) for the time being.

The mice, measuring a few inches from nose to tail, have in between then and now been causing quite a stir.

Head verger at The Stump Adam Kelk told The Standard that people – dubbed ‘mice tourists’ by staff – have been coming into the church to hunt for the creations.

At the time of writing, staff had found 30 mice in places including the choir stalls, near the organ, in the Cotton chapel, in the font, and coming out of the door of the matchstick model of The Stump.

It is understood, however, there are 54 to find in the building.

“It’s great people are coming in to find them,” Adam said.

The individual or individuals responsible for the mice have told The Standard the tree is the next part in the story, with a final chapter coming soon.

“We are still in the process of creating a lot of mystery,” they said.

The Stump also now knows who is behind these wooden creations.

The tree is situated next to the font in the church,

Adam says he expects the tree will ‘intrigue people’.

He said: “I really like it, we love the mice and it is great to have this as well.”
