“It’s time residents’ concerns were taken seriously” - Call for action over traffic after sinkhole emerges in Boston-area road

Calls have been made for more to be done to manage traffic along a road in Boston following the emergence of a large sinkhole along its course.

The issue was reported a number of times to the authority via the FixMyStreet during the course of Monday, with one estimating it to be more than a metre wide.

However, one went further, using it as an opportunity to raise concern about traffic along the road.

“It’s a weight-restricted road that has continuous lorries and trucks down it,” they wrote. “We need width barriers and speed bumps at this residential end to ensure the lorries stop ruining the road that isn’t designed for their weights.

“It’s been reported many times the amount of unauthorised vehicles using the road which will have contributed to this huge safety concern, alongside the speed of which racers go along the road, to which speed bumps and width restrictions would also address.

“The sinkhole is easily large enough for a bike to have completely been engulfed and do serious damage to a car, and now we have no idea if more will happen or other areas are excessively weakened from unauthorized use.”

“It’s time residents’ concerns were taken seriously,” they conclude.

On Facebook, Linda Spinks, of West End Road, shared a photo of the sinkhole to alert others.

Speaking to The Standard, she echoed the comments made on FixMyStreet, saying: “It is ridiculous how much traffic this road now has with constant speeding. I counted three lorries one after the other last week down here.”

The Standard approached the council about traffic concerns in West End Road.

A spokesman said it would be holding off from commenting on the concerns until an investigation into the sinkhole had been concluded.

In its latest update on FixMyStreet, the council said its highways team has issued the work out to one of its delivery gangs.
