Argos is warning customers about a text scam - here’s what to look out for
With so much of modern life revolving around technology and our mobile phones, it’s more important than ever to keep ourselves safe from scammers.
Argos customers have reported receiving fraudulent messages designed to trick people into believing they’ve won a competition. This is what you need to know about the scam in order to stay safe.
What to look out for
The text message says, “Argos - Congratulations, you’ve won the £500 gift. Don’t miss out! Your gift is valid until Fri 14th February” and is followed by a link.
The link originally led to a fake version of the Argos website that was designed to trick customers, but it has since been taken down.
One person tweeted a screenshot of the text to the official Argos twitter account, asking if the message was real or not. The Argos account replied, writing, “Hi, that appears to be a scam message, do not click the link and delete the message.”
A spokesperson for Argos said, “Customers should be mindful of phishing scams. These messages are not from Argos and we are advising customers to delete them.”
How to spot a scam text
This isn’t the first time Argos customers have been targeted by scammers - on the Argos website, they’ve put together some advice for customers who are worried they’ve been contacted by a scammer.
Be wary of text messages relating to competitions or voucher giveaways and instead check official sites to see any competitions.
