Flying start for gym club

Girls from Worksop Gymnastics Club have got off to a flying start to the 2012 competition season, winning medals at the Regional Grades Championships on 26th February.

A week later they repeated that success at the County Floor and Vault Championships which, for the first time, were hosted by the club at their home venue on the Welbeck Estate.

Fifteen-year-old Hannah O’Grady became National Grade 5 Champion and will now compete at the British Grades finals in Birmingham in April.

The teen is no stranger to the national leve, having qualified for the top competition every year since the age of 11.

Courtney Wood, 12, won Regional Grade 11 with distinction and to make it a family affair twin sister Britney passed Grade 12, whilst older sister Shannon took silver at Grade 10, both receiving distinctions.

At Grade 12 distinctions were also awarded to Pippa Chalmers, Hallie Elkington, Sydney Stratford and Libby Maguire.

Isobel Haythorne passed Grade 12 and Jodie Ferrol and Chloe Tate passed Grade 11.

At the Floor and Vault Championships Courtney Wood once again found winning form to take Gold in the 12/13 age group.

Hallie Elkington became Champion at Age 10/11 with Pippa Chalmers taking bronze, whilst Rosie Bradshaw and Shannon Wood took silver and bronze respectively at age 14-plus.

The medallists along with runners-up Jodie Ferrol and Sydney Stratford will now represent the County at the Regional finals in Leicester at the end of April.

Worksop Gym Club is taking part in the Bassetlaw Games and is hosting taster sessions to give opportunities for children to try gymnastics in the run-up to the Olympics.
