Bosses thrilled as Brigg hit five

Brigg Town consolidated their place in the NCEL Division One play-off places with a 5-1 win at home to Maltby Main on Saturday.

The Zebras sit fifth in the table, 12 points clear of sixth-placed Leeds UCFA who have played four games fewer, with most clubs below Brigg having several games in hand.

Brigg were four goals ahead by half-time thanks to strikes from Jack Varley, Josh Jordan, Jonathan Oglesby and Dayle Hutson, and after Main had pulled one back early in the second-half, Josh Batty added a fifth late on for the hosts.

Joint-boss Stephen McCarron told the club’s media after the game: “It was a good performance and probably one that’s been well overdue.

“In the first-half the lads were absolutely outstanding, including Donovan Day who came in – a young, local lad who ran so hard and he has a lot of power in him and is a very exciting prospect.

"We then had the luxury of Josh Batty coming off the bench and scoring on his 150th game for the club, so all in all it was three points and a really good day at the office.”

Fellow boss Martin Pembleton added that with Brigg now having almost a full squad to choose from as players recover from injury, he and McCarron are left with tough decisions to make.

He said: “You can’t make 16 or 18 people happy every week, there’s only 11 starters so that gives us a headache but it’s a good headache to have as we have so many players who are good enough to start and you couldn’t argue with any of them being picked.

"So squad-wise we are in a really good, healthy position and we have ten games to go and have put ourselves in an excellent position in the league. It’s like a little mini-league now and we’ll see where we are at the end of it but we’re feeling positive.”

This weekend, Brigg travel to Ilkley Town who sit just outside the relegation zone, before then hitting the road again for the trip to Selby who are in mid-table. Route One Rovers are then the visitors on February 21.
