Brigg Town boss lashes friendly defeat display as unacceptable

Brigg Town joint manager Martin Pembleton slammed his side's display in Saturday's 4-1 home friendly defeat by Bottesford Town.

The only Brigg goal was scored by Reece York and Pembleton said: “I must apologise to the Brigg Town fans as that was not an acceptable performance and nowhere hear the standards we put on the lads – and they know that.

“It wasn't good enough in any department. We haven't won any duels or any second balls. I understand they play a formation that can be difficult to cope with at times.

“But on the flip side as well they have weaknesses.

"They play a 4-4-2 diamond we should have exploited down the wings.

"But for some reason we never got to grips with it.

“We were on the back of a 4-1 defeat and it was thorougly deserved. If I am being brutally honest it could have been more.

“It was only a friendly but me and Macca (joint boss )Steve McCarron have got to have a conversation to see if we think we have got the right people in through the door or whether we need to add more.

“Was it just a one off? That's the question we have to ask ourselves.”

Trailing after just three minutes, Brigg levelled six minutes later from a well-placed York free kick.

Hutchinson then had a finish cleared off the line before the visitors scored again on 36 minutes.

A Dayle Southwell header shaved the post for the home side only to concede again right on half-time.

On 48 minutes a York free kick was turned onto the bar by the Bottesford keeper and the visitors then sealed the win with a deflected shot off a home player on 55 minutes.

New signing Southwell's luck was out again near the end as he lobbed the keeper but saw his shot hit the post.

In added time a Fisher header bounced just wide from a well delivered free kick to the far post.

The Zebras' next pre-season game is at Dearne & District on Friday night (7.30pm).

They will then host Hull United in their final pre-season outing on Tuesday, also with a 7.30 kick-off, ahead of their Northern Counties East League Division One season opener at home to Appleby Frodingham on Saturday, 25th July.

Three days later they will contest the first round of the NCEL Cup with an away tie at Kinsley Boys.
