First league loss of the season for young Town

WORKSOP Town Under-19s suffered their first league defeat of the season, going down 4-2 to Arnold Town at the Eagle Valley Stadium – the Eagles registering their first points of the campaign.

Arnold got off to the perfect start, taking the lead on three minutes when Corbi Brown cut inside before firing home into the bottom corner.

Buoyed by their start the Eagles dominated the opening exchanges with Marcus Fletcher and Tom Lees-Collier twice going close to extending the lead.

Slowly Worksop started to get into the game, Jack Denton going close on a couple of occasions and Reece Twell hitting the post.

Tigers eventually levelled on 33 minutes as Jack Bilau’s cross field pass found Tom Elliott on the left who cut inside, went round the home ‘keeper Tom Dudley and slotted the ball home.

Worksop made an excellent start to the second half as Adam Browne and Twell had very good chances, as well as Twell and Connor Thompson both hitting the woodwork.

There was also a strong penalty appeal that the referee waved away.

However, it was the home side who regained the lead on the hour mark, Lees-Collier heading home Joe Brothwell’s cross.

Four minutes later it was 3-1 to the Eagles as Brothwell’s corner fell to John King who made no mistake from six yards out.

Tigers hopes of getting back into the game suffered a setback with just under 20 minutes remaining when Rob Fenton was sent off for a second booking as he retaliated to being kicked by Tom Shelbourn, pushing the striker away, who got away unpunished for his kick.

With five minutes of the game remaining Tigers were back in the game when Ashley Jackson fired home from six yards out as the ball fell to him from Bilau’s free-kick.

Hopes of an equaliser were short lived as two minutes later Fletcher ran onto a through ball over the top of the Tigers defence to fire past Jordan Rudge.

The Under-19’s are back in action on Thursday 25th October, when they entertain Staveley Miners Welfare at Shirebrook Town FC, with a 7.45pm kick-off.
