Free-scoring Horncastle Town make it 20 goals in just two games

Free-scoring Horncastle Town chalked up another huge victory in the Lincolnshire League Premier Division on Saturday with a 9-0 thrashing of Grimsby Borough Reserves.

It followed the previous week's sparkling 11-1 away win at Louth Town Reserves with confidence pumping through the Wongers.

Liam Cotton led the rout on Saturday with another hat-trick while Jamie Behan grabbed a brace and the other goals from Reece Pemberton, Alfie Vickers, Aiden Willerton, and Jamie Riddel.

Joint manager Lewis Burchnall said: “It’s been another good week for the club with both the first team and reserves winning again.

“Scoring 20 goals in two games shows we’re developing a real ruthless streak.

“We dropped points earlier in the season because we weren’t taking chances.

"But we knew as long as we were creating them the goals would start to come, and so it’s proved.

“We got off to a flying start on Saturday and it was a great goal from Reece Pemberton, who started the move by heading a corner away and just kept running forward until he got the ball back and curled it in the top corner.

“Liam Cotton made it two almost immediately and that opened the floodgates for us.

“Liam’s been outstanding all season but these last few games he’s gone to another level.

“He’d never scored a hat-trick in senior football until last week and now he’s got two in two games.

He continued: “It was 6-0 at half-time but I’m pleased we came out again wanting more goals and ensuring we kept the clean sheet intact.

“Aiden Willerton created five of the goals and eventually got one himself, Jamie Behan got his second of the day and Jamie Riddel finished the scoring with a rare header. There were a couple of missed chances to make it 10 but we can’t ask any more of the lads.

“We’re up to third in the league although it’s still very tight between several teams so we’re not getting carried away.

“This Saturday we go to Cleethorpes Town Reserves in the County Junior Cup.

"We beat them at home in the league last month and obviously we’re playing well, so we go there with plenty of confidence.”

Horncastle’s reserves earned back-to-back victories with a 2-1 win at Pinchbeck United Development. Michael Harness and a Kye Rook penalty put Town 2-0 up, though they needed Harry Masters in top form at the other end to secure the points.
