Skegness United 2

Lincoln Railway 2

Skegness United held fourth-placed Lincoln Railway to a 2-2 draw in the Lincolnshire League on Saturday.

Having beaten their opponents 3-0 in the county capital back in August, United continued to be a thorn in their rivals’ side at Wainfleet Road.

The home side kicked off against the wind and on a heavy pitch.

During the early stages of the match it was Railway who had control without causing any major concerns for Travis Portas in the home goal, while United were reduced to isolated attacks.

United weathered an early storm, including a series of Railway corners, while Skegness’ Jake Portas delivered a corner which was headed just over by Harry Ginniff.

The first real direct shot on goal did not come until three minutes before half-time when the hosts opened the scoring.

A free kick was awarded 25 yards out and Nathan Wetton fired his shot through the home defence, taking a slight deflection on the way beyond Kane Wilkes in the visitor’s goal.

United took their lead into the interval, and hoped to build upon that with the wind behind their backs in the second half.

But within three minutes Railway were level.

A free kick given away on United’s left was headed home at the far post by Jordan Curtis.

Seconds later and Skegness almost regained the lead, but Michael Howard shot over.

Following a United corner, Corey Cunliffe then saw an effort end the same way before Tom Pickett rattled the Lincoln woodwork.

On 73 minutes Railway took the lead when United gave away a needless free kick, and Simon Mowbray, the league’s leading scorer fired home through the defensive wall into the corner of the net.

However, that was to be Mowbray’s final meaningful involvement as he saw red for comments made.

From this point United took control of the game and deservedly drew level on 85 minutes following another excellent free kick delivery from Jake Portas.

The ball was knocked on by Danny Reid to Howard, who ghosted in at the far post to score from five yards out.

A clash on the halfway line including by a number of players resulted in the Railway assistant manager Stuart Ward being sent from the technical area and Howard shown a yellow card.

United pressed the Railway goal until the end, looking to secure the three points.

However, they had to settle for a point.

UNITED: T. Portas, J. Portas, Wetton, Grey, Simpson (Ashwell), Howard, Hobbins, Cunliffe, Pickett (Kendrick), Ginniff (Reid), Paul.

Man of Match: Nathan Wetton.
