Maeve (6) braves the chop for charity

A six-year-old girl from the Sleaford area has raised over £500 for a children’s cancer charity by donating her hair.

Maeve Lavall-Tammack, from Sleaford, had 10 inches of her locks cut off on August 1 at I and T Hair Salon in Southgate, and then donated to the Little Princess Trust.

The charity turns donated hair into free real-hair wigs for children who have lost their own hair while undergoing treatment for cancer and other medical conditions.

Proud mum Maddie Phillips said: “This act of kindness is so true to who she is. She has the biggest heart, always thinking about others before herself, and when she learned that she could make a difference simply by donating her hair, she didn’t hesitate. She’s chosen to do something incredibly brave and generous, knowing it could help another child feel confident again."

Both of Maddie’s parents have successfully battled cancer and several family members on Maeve’s father’s side have also been fighting it.

Maddie explained her daughter comes from a medical family too: “My mum was a nurse and I used to work for the charity LIVES as an emergency falls responder. I now work in a pharmacy but want to train to be a paramedic in the future. Maeve has always said about being a nurse and being there at the hospital waiting until I bring a patient to her and we can save them together."

Maddie said Maeve has always been very and caring and very hands on with her little sister. If anyone is poorly she will be there doing everything she can to make them feel better.

"It’s just very much in her nature to want to help where she can,” she said. “When she’s playing with her cousin the doctors kit is always the first thing she will pick up - that or her Barbie ambulance!

“So when she spoke about wanting to cut her hair short, we told her about the charity, Little Princess Trust, and how they help to provide real hair to other little girls, who have cancer, and she lapped up the idea.”

With her only being six, they left it for a few months to see if she would continue to show interest, but she persistently asked and so they booked the cut.

Maeve has raised £525 in donations, surpassing her £150 target, and people can still donate at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/maeves-big-chop

This comes on top of Maeve being twice recognised by her primary school (William Alvey) for outstanding kindness this year.

“To bring confidence, happiness and a little bit of extra sparkle for another little girl, that will be carried with Maeve forever,” said Maddie.

"She felt really good having all that hair chopped off and it feels a lot fresher in this heat!”
