“Offering Higher Apprenticeships to our staff is new and exciting and a credit to the Cross Professional Clinical Development team within NLaG and the staff at North Lindsey College. Through the team’s hard work at developing this course we were able to offer this programme within the first month of the government’s launch of the Apprenticeship Levy.”

Rebecca Reeves (24) a Physiotherapy Assistant Practitioner has signed up for the programme and stated, “This is a really good opportunity to further our careers, we can also do a top up year and complete the full degree; It will also give me more knowledge and understanding of my job.

“Health and social care can take you anywhere - there are so many different jobs in the sector and this could be a massive stepping stone in the industry.”

Jill Cooper, Business Development Director said, “We are delighted to welcome the staff from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust starting their Higher Apprenticeships with the University Centre.

“We work together with the Trust to support staff development and look forward to enabling this first group to move forward in their careers and enhance the quality of care to local people. As part of our partnership with the Trust on a range of apprenticeship programmes, we see this as a vital route to developing and retaining skills in our area vital to this key sector. Apprenticeships are not only important for recruitment but also to support staff development within the workplace.”

Ian Barkley (Curriculum Development Lead in Health) believes this is another really important contribution to enabling local people to access Higher Education on their doorstep. He said, “Offering one of the very first Health and Social Care Higher Apprenticeships to commence in the country here at the University Centre is a real achievement. We hope this is the first of a number of new opportunities in the area of health and social care, building on the wide range of University courses covering a range of subjects, already available in Scunthorpe.”

This new Higher Apprenticeship programme includes the Foundation Degree in Professional Practice in Health and Social Care. The University Centre has more than 30 students doing this qualification which may lead to potential career development as a registered health and social care professional.
