A unique evening at Welbeck raises £41k

The Dukeries Macmillan Cancer Support Committee has raised £41,000 at a special event in the State Apartments at Welbeck Abbey.

Exclusive access to the apartments, the private home of the grandson of the Duke of Portland William Parente and his wife Alison, was granted to 230 guests on 18th May.

While enjoying champagne and canapés, the guests enjoyed a reading by celebrity poet Paul Cookson and listened to guest speaker Fiona Goldsbys’ story of her battle to survive a brain tumour, with the help of Macmillan.

Fiona’s moving account spurred the guests on to some enthusiastic bidding for a range of auction prizes, including a holiday in Sri Lanka.

Kathryn Wilson, Dukeries Macmillan Chairman, said: “The money raised will help towards the much needed services provided by Macmillan including the Macmillan nurse, helping people with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.”

“It costs £41,000 to fund a nursing post for nine months so this tangible result could not have been achieved without the kindness of William Parente and Alison Swan Parente who let us into their beautiful home, and the generosity of individuals and businesses, including our main sponsors Asda”.
