Cinema plans approved for Sleaford

Planning permission has been granted for a cinema in Sleaford.

Planning permission has been granted for cinema operator Savoy to bring forward its four-screen, 349-seat scheme in the centre of Sleaford.

The plans submitted by Savoy Cinemas Ltd in early June have today, (Friday, September 11) been signed off, paving the way for an anticipated start on site in November leading to an opening in early 2028.

The old Citizens’ Advice building at the entrance to Money’s Yard will be demolished to clear the riverside site, as will the old toilet block to reconfigure access and parking around it.

Located in the middle of town, with easy access from Southgate, adjacent parking and proximity to other businesses, bars, restaurants and cultural venues, district council Leader Coun Richard Wright said it will bring investment right into the heart of Sleaford.

“This is much more than just a cinema,” he said. “It’s an investment and an expression of confidence in Sleaford and a continuation in delivery by North Kesteven District Council for community benefit and economic opportunity within the district.

“I’m thrilled that as we come close to completion on the new toilets and Changing Place alongside the cinema site, move forward with new parking provision at Kesteven Street, see new businesses opening in the town and facilitate significant interest in regeneration opportunities across various locations, the fulfilment of this long-held aspiration to bring a cinema back to Sleaford has also been achieved.”

As an independent cinema-chain, Savoy is dedicated to opening new locations in smaller market towns, making the experience of cinema as accessible as possible.

Managing Director James Collington said: “We are delighted to have our plans to bring the Savoy experience to the residents of Sleaford confirmed. Exciting times lie ahead as we bring this fantastic new venue to life. We are looking forward to commencing work on the development and welcoming guests through our doors on opening night."

The approval is for a brick-faced building that reflects its setting and the historic townscape through its design and materials, with a glass-fronted foyer and four screens with capacity of between 70 and 100 seats, totalling around 349.

Parking, including disabled provision, will continue within a reconfigured Money’s Yard and with the new car park at Kesteven Street bringing 45 new parking spaces, taken together, the council says it has ensured no overall reduction in availability.

Internally, Savoy – which already operates eight cinemas including in Grantham, Boston, Gainsborough and Nottingham – promises ‘a state-of-the-art cinema experience, well-proportioned screens, clear sightlines, latest audio-visual technologies, recliner seating and improved comfort levels’.
