'Victim literally did not see the punch coming': Man from Skegness jailed after “ferocious” pub attack

A man from Skegness has been sent to prison after a “ferocious” attack on a fellow pubgoer, police have reported.

Jamie Patrick, 23, carried out the assault on a 37-year-old man from Grantham outside The Fayre Spot pub, at the Cresset in Bretton, on February 1 last year.

According to Peterborough Police, Patrick followed the victim outside, punching him from behind so hard he fell while holding a glass, before striking him further and stamping on his head.

The victim suffered a broken jaw and serious injuries. He was taken by taxi to Peterborough City Hospital and later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for surgery. Police report he may have permanent nerve damage to his face.

Patrick, of South Parade, Skegness, was identified as the offender after police issued a CCTV appeal. He appeared at Huntingdon Law Courts on 16 January, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

DC Sam Moorby, who investigated the case, said: "The victim had gone outside to have a cigarette and, out of the blue, Patrick ferociously attacked him from behind. The victim literally did not see the punch coming and had no opportunity to defend himself.

"He suffered life-changing injuries as a result of this unprovoked attack."

Peterborough Police said the case demonstrates their commitment to pursuing offenders who cause serious harm and act with no regard for others’ safety.
