Coningsby dog handlers take top honours at RAF Police Military dog trials

Two RAF Coningsby dog teams have secured first and second places at the 2026 RAF Police Military Working Dog Trials.

Corporal Evans and dog Katy of RAF Coningsby’s Police and Security Flight were crowned overall champions, while Corporal Poore and dog Nina secured second place against some of the RAF Police’s strongest handler teams.

RAF Police Dogs act as protection and a deterrent, patrolling stations to detect, track, and detain unauthorized intruders. Sniffer and gundog breeds locate explosives, weapons, illegal drugs, and vehicle-borne or aircraft-borne contraband.

Dogs teams also assist in tracking missing persons, conducting building and open-area clearances, and performing public reassurance or welfare roles.

Before specialising as dog handlers, RAF Police personnel complete police training before undertaking additional instruction in dog handling, operational procedures, animal welfare, kennel management and veterinary first aid.

The RAF says Military Working Dogs and their handlers train together continuously to maintain the high standards required for operational duties. This training develops not only technical competence but also the trust and understanding that allow each team to work confidently and effectively in demanding environments.

Corporal Evans said: “Katy has been brilliant throughout the competition and I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together. The trials are challenging and demand a lot from both handler and dog, so to come away with first place is a fantastic feeling. She's my teammate every day, and this result is a credit to all the hard work that's gone in over the years.”

Corporal Poore said: “Nina gave everything in every phase of the competition, and I'm delighted with how she performed. Finishing second against such strong teams is something we're both very proud of. The bond you build with your dog is hard to put into words, and seeing that trust pay off in competition makes all the training worthwhile.”

Group Captain Andy Hampshire, Station Commander at RAF Coningsby, said: “I am immensely proud of Corporal Evans and Corporal Poore. Their achievement is testament to their skill, professionalism and the extraordinary bond and teamwork between handler and dog.”

He added: “Their work often takes place away from the spotlight, but our Military Working Dog teams play a vital role in protecting our people, aircraft and operations. They are an essential part of the layered security that allows RAF Coningsby to remain safe, resilient and operationally ready.”
