Dennis Skinner MP opens an exhibition

A thought-provoking mining exhibition has been officially opened at Creswell Crags.

The exhibition called Mining Memories was opened by Dennis Skinner MP and runs until Sunday 1st March 2015.

It brings to life history recordings which were taken as part of Limestone Journeys project.

The recordings show memories of local mining history, including the Creswell Pit Disaster in 1950 and explores the role of the unions and even the superstitions of ghosts in the pits.

Roger Shelley, director of Creswell Heritage Trust said: “The impact that the coal industry had will never be forgotten by those who lived and worked with it daily.”

“This exhibition is a reminder of what it meant to the village of Creswell. “

“A fascinating later episode in the area’s amazing and captivating story.”

Creswell Crags is now calling on the community to get involved in the exhibition.

Visitors who have memories of the local mining industry and would like to share them, are being invited to get in touch with the centre and to be recorded as part of the project.

The volunteers will be interviews .

There is also training available for any volunteers who would like to learn how to use the recording equipment and help to recreate more of the local history.

The exhibition is open to everyone of all ages and is free to enter.
