The road had to be closed after the fire at a residential property threatened to spread to a second and the adjoining property had to be evacuated, said police.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson stated: “We are saddened to confirm the death of a woman in her 80s after a house fire in Swineshead.”

They added: “She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. We believe this to be the body of the 86-year-old woman who lived at the property, although formal identification has not yet taken place.”

Mark Baxter, chief fire officer at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said three crews from Kirton, Boston and Sleaford responded to the fire.

"Upon arrival, our firefighters were met with a well-developed fire in the roof space and reports of an individual in the building,” he said.

"Despite the best efforts of our crews a woman was sadly found unresponsive on the scene.

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those affected by this loss, and we will ensure our firefighters who responded to this tragic incident have the support they need."

Mr Baxter added: “A joint investigation has determined that the fire started as the result of an electrical fault within the property.”

Despite extensive enquiries, police said they were initially unable to locate any next of kin for the woman and made a public appeal.

On Wednesday evening (September 9) they announced they had now been in contact with her family.

They added: “We are working closely with our colleagues at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue to fully understand what happened, and the investigation is ongoing. Officers will remain on scene while enquiries continue.”
