Mr and Mrs Greg and Beverley Suszczenia, owners of Haxey Stores on Greenhill Road, have applied to North Lincolnshire Council to erect three buildings on land at the rear, following the demolition of an existing detached garage.

The move follows the opening of the £1.2m 3,000 square feet Co-op on High Street which has had a “significant impact upon the commerical viability of the present business”.

The couple had voiced their concerns about the new store back in 2011 when the plans were first submitted, stating it could result in the closure of their long-established business.

A report to the council’s planning committee states: “Greenhill Stores has provided the village a village store service for many years, establishing itself as an important amenity within Haxey.

“However, the recent opening of a new Co-op store within Haxey has had a significant impact upon the commercial viability of the present business.

“This sudden change of circumstances caused by the new store has required the owners to consider the future of the store and associated site.”

The land to the rear of Greenhill Stores is currently overgrown and unused other than the area immediately adjacent to the shop being utilised as ad-hoc parking for shop staff and bin storage.

The dwellings will be constructed in a phased approach to add to and enhance this piecemeal development.

A decision on the application is expected in April.
