A busy weekend of fundraising by Team Verrico
On Good Friday we were awarded Scunthorpe United F.C’s share of the Community Shield proceeds.
I remember as a child watching the start of season curtain raiser and wondering where the fixture got its name.
Now I know all league clubs get a share of the gate receipt proceeds to distribute to local charities.
We were nominated by the Scunthorpe United fans and I was privileged to accept the cheque on the pitch before the game against Peterborough from David Beeby, the club’s General Manager and Adam Grice, the club’s Deputy Company Secretary.
I was also able to give a short speech explaining what TeamVerrico is currently doing in the local community. The £667 donated will go directly to a cancer sufferer’s treatment, second opinion or genetic sequencing.
On Easter Sunday we had eight skydivers jumping out of an aeroplane at Hibaldstow aerodrome on Easter Sunday to raise funds for the charity.
A cheque for £4,516 was presented to the charity’s treasurer, Jackie McHale (who lives in Wroot).
Jackie said: “This was a fantastic achievement from the fundraising team.
“I was pleased to stay on the ground and watch those brave souls take to the skies!”
Jumping was Gary Kitchen, one of my widowed friends who was taking part in memory of his late wife, Tracey.
He said: “it was amazing and uplifting. Loved it!”
“This time of year is busy for us with a lot of sponsored events and the ball on June 13 at the Baths Hall.
It’s also the time when we have to prepare and submit our annual accounts to the Charities Commission to demonstrate proper governance.
Closing on the Scunthorpe United theme we also have a bucket rattle at the last home game of the season versus Gillingham.
If anyone wants to do a bit of volunteering with their little ones at the game, get in touch!
