Boston photographer shares spectacular selection of images of eclipse

Here is a selection of spectacular shots of last week’s partial solar eclipse, shared with The Standard by Boston photographer Christiaan Lowe.

While Christiaan is dab hand with a drone (as evident here, here and here), these photos were taken on foot, using a Nikon DSLR with zoom lens.

Christiaan, 54, said: “It took a few days of planning my location, along with a trial test the day before with a new solar filter that blocks 99.9997 per cent of visible light, as the amplified sun through a lens is like a magnifying glass on your camera sensor, so without it, you’re sure to damage it completely.”

Christiaan’s aim was to capture images of the eclipse during its various phases, plus a shot with the Stump in it.

The movement of the sun as it dipped towards the horizon kept him on his toes. Starting off near Pescod Square Shopping Centre, taking photographs as he went, he made his way down Main Ridge West, across John Adams Way, onto Main Ridge East, before taking more photos halfway down Freiston Road, near the end of Eastwood Road, then finally in Toot Lane, near Hawthorn Tree School.

Though he described the results as ‘not perfect’, he said he was ‘very pleased’ with how it all went.
