Sign language courses set to be offered by council in Mablethorpe

Mablethorpe is in line to host a range of sign language courses that are to be launched by Lincolnshire County Council.

The council says its introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) modules will be available online and will run through the spring and the summer.

But in-person sessions are also scheduled to take place at venues in Mablethorpe and Grantham.

Full details have yet to be announced, but the council feels the courses will play an important role in its ongoing adult skills programme and could be particularly helpful for veterans of the Armed Forces.

Coun Liam Kelly, executive councillor for growth and veterans’ affairs, told the BBC: “ These BSL courses have the real opportunity to have a tangible impact on families, and we're extremely proud to add these to our learning offer.

"Sign language is vital for many in our county, including a lot of veterans, who may not have been born deaf but who, through their service, have developed hearing impairments.

"Developing and maintaining a method of communication with loved ones and services can help reduce isolation and drastically improve the quality of life.”

More information about the courses, dates and times will be released on the Lincolnshire Adult Skills and Family Learning Service section of the 2Aspire website.

The Lincolnshire Adult Skills and Family Learning Service offers a diverse range of courses designed to engage adults in learning.

These courses aim to enhance the quality of life, contribute to the local economy and provide pathways to further learning, training and volunteering opportunities.

The service says its is “committed to supporting and enabling adults to gain new skills and qualifications, improve their health and wellbeing, and discover how their children learn at school”.

It provides courses at accessible venues across Lincolnshire, as well as online, in collaboration with a range of training providers.

It is funded by the government’s Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and focuses on delivering high-quality learning to those who are least likely to participate in learning.

A 2Aspire spokesperson said: “We believe everyone should have the chance to learn new things. We have classes for adults that make learning fun and simple. Our goal is to make life better for you and for the place where you live.”
