After spending most of the weekend worrying about flooding, the area was hit by heavy snowfall overnight with more expected during the next 24 hours.

There were reports of several minor accidents with the A158 and A153 - the main routes in and out of Horncastle - badly hit.

According to reports, the A153 is closed in a number of places - including Cawkwell Hill and Belchford crossroads, between Louth and Horncastle - while the A158 was at standstill on Spilsby Road near Horncastle town centre.

In a statement on Twitter, police told drivers: “A number of major and minor roads in the Wolds area are impassable. Please, stay at home.”

Taking to Twitter, Horncastle, Spilsby and Woodhall Spa Police added: “The A158 from Horncastle to Skegness & the A153 to Louth are closed with numerous accidents reported. Please #StayHome #Staysafe if possible.”

One worrying aspect of the closures is the A153 is the main route for people attending Covid-19 vaccinations at Louth Hospital and Boston.

Meanwhile, the A158 was closed at the weekend due to flooding between Hagworthingham and Sausthopre.

There were high-level flood warnings issued for the River Waring in Horncastle while flood defences stopped major flooding in the town from the River Bain.

Horncastle Town Council said it had sandbags available but several people hit out on social media after being told they would have to fill them with either soil or sand themselves.
