The Kinema will, however, be open this week, until Sunday, March 22.

Screenings will be sold at no more than 25 per cent capacity and will be enforcing social distancing.

They are also asking for contactless card payments over cash where possible.

A spokesman for the Kinema said: “We would like to assure you that it is a top priority to ensure the health and safety of both our staff and customers and in the past weeks we have stepped up our already thorough cleaning regimes to include even more regular cleaning of any hard surfaces, door handles, cup holders and so on.

“If you are at all unwell, please do not come to the cinema.

“We are having to make the heart-breaking decision to suspend all films from Monday 23rd March for the foreseeable future.”

Kinema staff will be in touch with anyone with pre-booked tickets for screenings after March 23 and request people wait to hear from then as they will be prioritising imminent events first.

Any pre-booked streaming events that are able to go ahead will do so.

The Kinema is asking people to consider supporting them at this difficult time.

The spokesman added: “Please consider purchasing a Kinema gift voucher online for future use; these are valid for five years.

“We would like to thank all our patrons for supporting us over the years and we hope to see you again soon.”

• The final programme for the time being will include:

Radioactive (12A) Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Misbehaviour (12A) Friday, Saturday and Sunday
