RAF Coningsby contractor wins RAF Rally Championship

Adrian “Ady” Warrant (41) from Wrangle took part in the rally championship organised by the RAF Motorsports Association (RAFMSA) earlier this month.

The championship, which is open to RAF personnel and contractors, comprises of five single venue stage rally events of the driver’s choice with the final event being the Rockingham Stages on December 5 and 6.

Ady, a CarillionAmey contractor, and his partner Clare Law (40), an RAF officer based at RAF Halton and also from Wrangle, notched up their points by taking part in the Horiba D’Isis stages (Hinckley), Flying Fortress stages (Grafton Underwood), Jane Cowling Memorial stages (Fulbeck), Cadwell stages (Louth) and Rockingham stages (Corby).

Despite this being their first season together, Ady had enough points to take the lead driver whilst Clare was third navigator.

Ady, a former Formula 400 motorcycle champion, said: “I did a little bit of rallying some years ago but have never entered a championship before. It is a team effort though, and I couldn’t have done it without Clare or the support of the RAF.”

The couple’s rally car is a modified BMW M3 Compact affectionately known as ‘Judy’. She has coped with surfaces from the smooth tarmac of Cadwell to the rougher former airfield perimeter track of Fulbeck and done anything up to 100 stage miles in an event.

This was Clare’s first time rallying. She said: “I’ve never given anything like this a go before but I persuaded Ady to develop the car and enter the RAF MSA championship.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it and out on the stage it’s definitely the one time I know he listens to every word I say!”

Ady concluded: “We are both looking forward to the Christmas break before getting back into the garage and ready for the challenge and excitement of the 2016 RAF MSA championship.”
