River wildlife project and history trail

Project officer Marie Taylor said: “We have been involved in rehabilitating the river with volunteers in January and we hope that the interpretation board will provide the locals with some useful information regarding the aims of the works along with historical information of the river and the wildlife around the area.”

She explained the volunteers have created some habitat and flow diversity to the straight, river channel, using raised pinch-points (berms) to make a ‘more eye pleasing 
river’.

Mrs Taylor said they first dug out and dumped sediment in the river to create the ‘berms’. She said: “The berms have been enhanced and reinforced by bundles of wood called faggots. Finally, the berms are filled with vegetation which hopefully will take hold and look more natural within a few years.”
