Boston-area road reopens after sinkhole, but mystery remains over cause
A road near Boston has reopened after a large sinkhole forced its closure last week – however, ‘no clear cause’ has been identified for the fault.
Lincolnshire County Council closed West End Road, Wyberton, on Tuesday (May 26) following the emergence of a sinkhole near the junction with London Road.
Today (Wednesday, June 3), the authority announced the road had reopened and provided information about the work that has been taking place to fix the fault.
This included removing the wet and loose material, exposing the utilities and drainage systems underneath, and then checking to see if a failure of any pipes or structures had caused the issue.

Early checks showed the council’s surface water drainage was fully intact, the authority said.
Anglian Water was then asked to inspect its pipes and chambers. Its system was also found to be working as it should, leaving ‘no clear cause’ behind the collapse, the council said.
Ashley Behan, traffic manager at the council, said: “When something like this happens you strip it right back and check every part of the structure. We dug out the loose material, exposed the utilities and drainage and went through each section to make sure nothing had broken.
“Both our drainage and Anglian Water’s were in full working order which meant there was no obvious fault sitting underneath the road.”
With no single issue identified, the highways team proceeded to rebuild the road. All weakened, old, sub‑base material was removed and replaced before the area was built up again with new material, concrete and a new surface layer.
Mr Behan added: “Because we could not identify a clear cause we will be monitoring the area closely. If anything happens again we will go straight back in and carry out a deeper investigation. The priority is keeping the road safe for everyone who uses it.” The emergence of the sinkhole prompted calls for more to be done to manage traffic along the road, with reports that HGVs are ignoring the weight limit.
