It may be six months away but planning is well underway for the 2015 Wroot Feast.

A group of dedicated volunteers have already joined forces to conjure up a host of attractions for villagers to enjoy in the summer.

Wroot Feast commemorates St Pancras – the patron saint of children – and since 1890 it is always held on the Saturday nearest to July 11, this year it actually falls on that date.

Organiser Neil Sanderson explained: “The tradition of Wroot Feast is to give all the children of Wroot a sports day and their teas, and for all the residents to get together and enjoy the day.”

The events start at noon with a parade of floats from Southlands Farm led by banner carriers from Wroot Travis School, followed by Morris Dancers, vintage tractors, classic cars and Wroot Queen.

Many of the floats are kept a secret until the day, as there is a healthy dose of competition from those who get involved.

Feast day also includes the judging of a scarecrow competition.

Already in the pipeline for this year is a classic car show, displays from Grimsby Morris Dancers, Hatfield Flyball Dog Display Team, a tug of war competition, children’s races, balance bike racing.

There will also be a circus workshop plus static displays from the Isle of Axholme Model Flying Club and Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust, Owlin’ Mad will be taking along feathered friends and The Cycle Barn of Misterton will supply a road racer bike for a time trial competition.

Neil said: “Axholme Bridleways Association will be there to inform people of their work. This will be of interest to walkers, runners and riders alike to discover new ways to enjoy our beautiful Isle.

“Last year American diner The Roadhog (a converted American School Bus) went down a storm and are coming back due to popular demand.”

There will plenty to see within the main marquee, such as the produce competition, arts and crafts, jams and preserves, home baking, bee hives and face painting.

There will also be a grand raffle.

Also running throughout the afternoon will be traditional games such as bowling for a pig and welly-wanging as well as a Mario Kart Championship competition, snail racing and a doodle wall.

The Wroot Feast Committee are always on the look out for volunteers, and any level of help is appreciated, whether that is joining the committee, helping out on the day, or with promotion.

The event could not go ahead without the help of the local authority and Neil this week said the committee was thankful for the North Lincolnshire Council Community Grant it had received.
