Cricket: Brigg and Hibaldstow secure wins in another weather-hit weekend

Only three of our village sides were in action on what was in effect the opening day of the 2016 Lincolnshire League season.

All games in the county had been called off the previous week as the wet spring weather took its toll on grounds already saturated. And there was far from a full programme last weekend.

Hibaldstow beat Cleethorpes Third XI by six wickets in Division Two.

Cleethorpes’ total of 94 on a slow outfield was better than it might seem at first glance, Sam Baker top scoring with 30. Opening bowler Tom Taylor took 3 for 9 for Hibaldstow and was well supported by Nathan Goodhall (3 for 13) and Josh Cowling (2 for 36).

Hibaldstow’s reply of 95-4 was built around the veteran Jon Taylor, who was undefeated on 41, and Goodhall who hit 36, reaching their target in 32 overs to start the season with an impressive 20 points.

* Brigg Town had a comfortable win over Caistor Thirds in Division Four.

Hosts Caistor were put in by Brigg and struggled to post a decent score. Ryan McKitton at the top of the order was far and away the highest scorer with an impressive 40 before being lbw to Phil Dewfall.

Dewfall was Brigg’s main wicket-taker with 4 for 23 from his 15 overs, well supported by Nick Beacock (2 for 32).

Brigg hit the runs in 23 overs, reaching 87-4 as Harry Cadwallader made 31 and Jack Richards 24 to secure 20 points.

* Keelby Seconds, also in Division Four, went down to Lindum Third XI by six wickets in a low-scoring game.

The hosts were all out for a dismal 48 in 20 overs as extras top scored with 16! Lindum took just nine overs to reach their target, losing four wickets, all to Udi Sheikh.
