Battle to stay up goes to the wire for Sleaford

Sleaford Town will face a last-day battle to avoid a second successive relegation this weekend as they host Radford in the UCL Division One.

The Greens go into the weekend’s game sitting outside of the relegation zone on goal difference from Holwell Sports, with whom they drew 2-2 last Saturday thanks to a crucial injury-time equaliser from Kyle Onyon, who had also earlier netted a penalty.

That goal ensured Sleaford remained outside the relegation zone and also meant their fate is in their own hands.

They could also face a challenge from Gedling MW, who if they beat Sandiacre Town on Tuesday night (14th) will only be a point behind both Sleaford and Holwell.

Pinchbeck United are also in the mix, a point ahead of Sleaford, and whilst Radford aren’t mathematically safe, their superior goal difference shouldn’t mean they are in any trouble this weekend.

And Greens boss Jamie McGhee, whilst also reflecting on Saturday’s late point, told the club’s media it will be a massive game on Saturday.

He said: “It was another game of two halves and I didn’t think we were at it at all in the first-half. We changed shape and got a foothold for the last ten minutes of the half and we were then so much better in the second-half and I was really pleased with the character we showed.

"Looking ahead to Saturday, we need to try not to make it such hard work.

"Radford have won today so that should make them safe, but we have to concentrate on ourselves and we certainly can’t afford to start slowly again.

"So we’ve got to use the second-half from last Monday and the second-half from today and put it all into one, and hopefully we can get the right result to make things a lot easier and have a positive outcome to see out the season.”
