Boss urges high-flying Gainsborough Trinity to stay humble

Gainsborough Trinity manager Russ Wilcox is delighted with his side's current form but knows that they need to stay humble.

The Holy Blues secured their fourth win on the spin on Saturday in a 4-0 win at The Northolme against Hyde United.

A goal in the first two minutes by Jordan Helliwell, followed by second half strikes from Fraser Preston, Ronnie Kokkinos and a stoppage time goal from Connor Brown saw Trinity collect three points.

With goals coming from different scorers all over the pitch, and even off the bench, the Trinity boss was pleased and notes his players stepping up this season.

Wilcox said: “It’s huge, that’s probably been the difference this year with people stepping up and scoring goals.

“Everybody’s contributing so it’s going really well at the moment, but you’ve got to stay level and stay humble.

“Been in the game a long time and things can change quickly, but at this moment in time we’re in a really good place, lads are enjoying their football which is massive, and they’re so together as a group.”

Helliwell’s goal early on set the sides apart before the game became very possession based with both teams looking to keep the lion’s share.

Unfortunately for Wilcox his side couldn’t score another goal before the break and he said: “I think it was challenging regarding the fans because there wasn’t a lot of goalmouth action.

“But I thought we started the second half really strongly, got on the front foot, pressed a little bit higher, and we know we’ve got quality.”

After a busy October so far, Gainsborough have a free week with their next fixture being at Warrington Town on Saturday.

Saturday's result saw Trinity climb to fourth place in the NPL Premier Division on goal difference and Wilcox said: “They’re buzzing, but we stay humble.

“That’s so important to do that. You’ve never arrived in football because you know you’re not going to win every game, and there’s going to be some difficult challenges ahead with one next week in Warrington Town.

“Every game is different as well, come up against physical sides, footballing sides, different pitches and this league is really challenging so we have to stay focused.”
