Drinks break the turning point as Boston United took control at Solihull Moors, says manager Paul Hurst

Boston United boss Paul Hurst said a first half drinks had proved crucial for his side in their 2-0 away win at Solihull Moors on Saturday.

It was a first win of the season for the Pilgrims after last week's opening home loss to Aldershot thanks to strikes by Lennon Wheeldon on 29 minutes and Ken Aboh just after the break, with a Tom Cursons penalty saved later on as Boston piled on the pressure.

“I won't lie, I wasn't particularly pleased with how we started the game,” said Hurst.

“It was a relatively comfortable afternoon in the end, but the first goal did change the game for us.

“The first goal was big as they had a little spell in which they missed the only two chances they had in the game, not too long after each other.

“Then we had a drinks break, which seemed to help us for whatever reason.

“Lennon scored a good goal after that, and from then on I thought we were the better team – or certainly the more threatening team.”

He continued: “Solihull had a lot of possession but never looked like they were going to hurt us too much. I can't remember Louis making a save of any note.

“A couple of balls that did come into the box from long throws, we defended them well.

“Ken tucked his goal away with a lot of confidence and I thought he was very good today, not only as an attacking threat but I felt he worked really hard without the ball.

“We kept a shape to us which allowed Solihull to have the ball at times, but we looked pretty solid.

“It was a slight criticism that I felt we should have won more comfortably in the end – and not just the penalty miss.

“They put men forward to try to get back into the game and we had other chances.

“A few times we picked them off and looked a threat on the counter, which is always pleasing.

“This has been a happy hunting ground for us in recent times and our fans were excellent.”

Cursons has still to get off the mark, but Hurst said: “I would be more worried if he wasn't getting any chances – it is inevitable the goals will come.

“He just needs to keep believing and not be too hard on himself.

“He had other chances apart from the penalty and on another day perhaps comes away with the match ball.”

With Nicholas Pozo coming off at the break after a knock to the head, summer signing Gavan Holohan made his debut as he works his way back from injury.

“I thought Gav was really good and hopefully he showed the fans some of the attributes he will bring,” said Hurst.

“At times he brings a bit of calm and know-how, and he's good in the air for someone who's not a giant.”

On Pozo's injury, he added: “We will do the right checks on him for any side effects, but hopefully he is fine to play.”
