Gainsborough Trinity boss Russ Wilcox frustrated by inconsistent start

Gainsborough Trinity have struggled for consistency in the opening games of a hectic Pitching In Northern Premier League schedule.

They picked up a hard-fought win over Ilkeston in midweek, but losses either side of that have left manager Russ Wilcox a frustrated figure.

Following Saturday's 4-2 defeat, away to Warrington Rylands, Wilcox admitted: “I'm shocked that we have performed like that.

“I apologise to the supporters who have spent their hard earned money and travelled a long way. I thought the scoreline flattered us.”

Stung by two early goals, Wilcox said: “We struggled to get any kind of foothold in the game - and it was just chalk and cheese from Tuesday night, when we were so good and, to a man, we put our bodies on the line, won our first contacts and made good decisions.

“I don't think I have seen us make so many poor decisions as we did on Saturday.

“And that's an experienced side out there. I expect more and demand more. We are quiet at the moment.

“On the back of a great result in midweek, a fantastic 1-0 win at Ilkeston, we should be at it.

“They were hungrier than us on Saturday. And fair play, they deserved the result. They thoroughly deserved the win, and maybe by more.

“Robbo (goalkeeper David Robson) has made two or three good saves. They've missed chances.

“To concede four - it could have been double that - there are no excuses. It was a shocking performance, and one that needs addressing very quickly.

“That was up there with Stafford Rangers for me. I was worried then and we got a reaction.

“Now we have another 37 games in the league- and I don't want to see another performance like that again.”

Wilcox doesn't have a huge squad at his disposal, to make wholesale changes, so the players will now be 100 per cent focused on turning things around.

And there is no time like the present, as the Holy Blues embark on a run of three games in six days. Stockton at home on Tuesday, before Lancaster City visit the Kal Group Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Cleethorpes Town, away on Bank Holiday Monday, round off a hectic programme.

The draw for this season's Emirates FA First Qualifying Round has taken place and the Holy Blues have been handed an away tie against Corby Town.

Trinity's first cup tie of the season, will be played on Saturday, 30th August, at Corby's Steel Park. Kick off at 3pm.

Darren Gray will be running a supporters' coach for the game with seats priced at £15 per person.Call 07425 331204 to book a seat.
