Unbeaten Horncastle Town ready to face free-scoring old rivals Wyberton

After starting the season with three successive draws, Horncastle Town will be hoping to chalk up their first Lincolnshire League Premier Division win against old rivals Wyberton on Tuesday night.

The Wongers were held 0-0 at home by Spilsby Town on Saturday and, without a game this Saturday, now prepare to take on a free-scoring Wyberton side that has won both their opening games in the division, scoring a remarkable 15 goals in those first two outings.

Joint manager Lewis Burchnall said: We now have had the week off from competitive games due to the fixture scheduling but we will train well to ready ourselves for the visit of Wyberton.

“There’s a rivalry going back many years when we were both regularly battling at the top end of the table and in the latter stages of cup competitions, so it’s usually a tasty game for the players and fans.

“They’ve started the league season well, particularly in terms of goalscoring, but we’re unbeaten in three games and believe we can beat anyone.

“The draw with Spilsby should be good preparation for this one as Wyberton are usually physical and direct as well. It’s a battle we’re looking forward to.”

On Saturday's game he said: “Last week we were the side dominating a game but somehow only coming away with a point, and this week we were on the other side of that coin as Spilsby had numerous chances to win the game but didn’t take them.

“We should’ve been full of confidence after playing so well against Moorlands, but we struggled to get a foothold in the game and things just weren’t really clicking.

“You can’t expect to play your best in every game.

"So when that happens you’ve got to dig in and find another way to get a result.

“We rode our luck at times, and I was much busier than I’d like, but we see it as a point gained in the circumstances and move on to the next game.”

Burchnall had an outstanding game on goal against Spilsby to take the man of the match accolade after a strong of important saves.

He was presented with the award by Dunk Lill from match sponsors Paul Riddel Scrap 'n' Skips.

Horncastle did pick up a trophy on Saturday as their U10s were victorious at their tournament in Bardney.

The Wongers have also announced that Polypipe Civils & Green Urbanisation have agreed to continue as kit sponsor for the club from junior to senior level this season.
