Kenwick Park: Andrea crowned ladies' champion for 2016

The hard work of the green staff paid off as Kenwick Park Golf Club was in superb condition, despite the continual recent rain, for the ladies' championship.

A field of 19 ladies battled it out for the title over 36 holes. Lady vice-captain Andrea Smaggasgale (9), shot a very steady round of 86 to take the lead in both the gross and nett competitions after the first round.

In the afternoon, she kept her nerve and improved her score by two shots to 84 to secure victory of both the Founders Salver, for the best gross of 170, and the Walmer Wine Cup for the best nett score of 152.

Defending champion Birdie Dawson (8) shot 182 (94+88) to take the runners-up spot in the gross championship, followed by Sandra Crow (12) who shot 183 (93+90) to come third.

In the nett competition, Jenny Baxter (16) was second with 157 after rounds of 80 and 77, ahead of Sandra Crow with 81+78=159.

* Sue Sykes won the prize for the best morning gross with 92, and Julie Harvey took the afternoon prize with a round of 93.

Bridget Hardaway (24), won the best nett round of the morning with 77, and Cheryl Gilliatt (22) took the afternoon prize with a score of 76.

The ladies who wanted to play 18 holes took part in a stableford competition.

A countback on 29 points was needed to separate winner Rose Stevenson (29 handicap) from runner-up Shirley Hemming (24).

Wendy Beaumont (35) came third with 28.

Mary Osmond (31) won the nine-hole stableford with 13 points.
