'A rare treat for Louth' -- award-winning string quartet to perform at concert

A multi award-winning string quartet with a growing reputation for performance excellence are heading to Louth for a concert.

The Isla Quartet are to appear in the latest show hosted by the Louth and District Concert Society – at the Riverhead Studio theatre on Victoria Road on Saturday, October 24 at 3 pm.

With works spanning more than 400 years, the concert will feature music to suit all tastes. A spokesperson for the society said: “A visiting string quartet is a rare treat for Louth, especially from such a distinguished and youthful ensemble”.

The quartet’s repertoire ranges from Purcell’s intricate fantasias that capture the courtly elegance of Tudor England, through the characteristic charm and wit of a Haydn string quartet, to the Danish quartet’s modern re-workings of traditional Nordic folk tunes.

Bartók’s inter-war transcendent masterpiece, his Fourth String Quartet, provides a thrilling conclusion to the adventurous programme.

The quartet, consisting of Mio Takahashi (first violin), Kynan Walker (second violin), Sofia Gomez Alberto (viola) and Danushka Edirisinghe (cello), came together at London’s Royal Academy of Music in 2023 and have been selected as The Tillett Trust’s Debut Scheme artistes for 2025/26.

The trust’s primary aim is to encourage and enable the most talented UK-based performers to continue pursuing their careers in classical music.

As Britten Pears Young Artistes in 2023/24, the Isla Quartet gave a lunchtime recital at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall in Suffolk at the end of their Chamber Music Residency, receiving coaching from Alasdair Beatson.

And most recently, they were winners of the inaugural RAM Nina Drucker Haydn String Quartet Prize 2024, as well as the Harold Craxton Prize, together with pianist Sherri Lun.

Tickets for the Louth concert are priced at £20, plus booking fee, and are available from the box office at the Riverhead Theatre (where there is free parking and a licensed bar), either in person (Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday 10 am to 1pm), via phone (01507 600350) or via its website at https://www.louthriverheadtheatre.com/events/the-isla-quartet.
