This summer's Big Friendly Read is launched at Horncastle and Woodhall Spa libraries

Children are being encouraged to delve into the wonderful world of books in the annual summer reading challenge at Horncastle and Woodhall Spa libraries.

This year’s theme is ‘The Big Friendly Read’ - celebrating the 100th year anniversary of BFG creator Roald Dahl’s birthday.

To encourage children to take part, the teams at Horncastle and Woodhall Spa have joined forces with The Reading Agency, and have planed a host of exciting activities.

Jude Hall, Team Leader at Woodhall Spa Library said: “It’s especially exciting with the new BFG film coming up and we hope to inspire and engage children to take part.”

    At Horncastle Library the events are:

    ○ Mondays - 10.30-11am – Story and Rhyme Time for under 5’s.

    ○ Thursday July 28 – 2-3pm – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Golden Ticket Treasure Hunt

    ○ Thursday August 4 – 2-3pm – George’s Marvellous Medicine Craft Activity

    ○ Thursday August 11 – 2-3pm – BFG Craft Activity

    ○ Thursday August 18 – 2-3pm – James and the Giant Peach Craft Activity

    ○ Thursday August 25 – 2-3pm – Matilda Craft Activity

    ○ Thursday September 1 – 2-3pm – Design Mr Twit’s beard complete with leftover food.

    ○ Friday September 16 – 4-4.30pm Certificate presentation and celebration

    At Woodhall Spa Library:

    ○ Tuesdays 2-2.30pm and Fridays 10.30–11am -Big Friendly storytime sessions throughout the summer

    ○ Saturday July 16 – 10am-1pm - Big Friendly Read launch and sign-up event with Roald Dahl in WWII to coincide with Woodhall Spa’s 1940s weekend.

    ○ Thursday July 28 – 2-3pm – Craft activity – ‘Friendship’. Celebrate Matilda and make your own friendship bracelet.

    ○ Thursday August 4 – 2-3pm – Craft activity –‘Inventions’. Make up your own revolting recipes inspired by George’s Marvellous Medicine and The Twits.

    ○ Thursday August 11 – 2-3pm – Craft activity – ‘Champions’. Make a bird feeder and feed the birds like Danny Champion of the World!

    ○ Thursday August 18 – 2-3pm – Craft activity – ‘Wordplay’. Let the BFG inspire you and create your own fabuliciously inventive words.

    ○ Thursday August 25 – 2-3pm – Craft activity – ‘Mischief’. Take part in our mischief inspired craft session!

    ○ Thursday Sept 1 – 2-3pm – Craft activity – ‘Adventure’. Travel the world like James and his Giant Peach and create your own adventure maps.

    ○ Tuesday Sept 13 – 3.30-4pm– The Big Friendly Certificate Presentation
