A search for the oldest Old Ludensians

King Edward VI Grammar School, established in Louth in 1551, today announced its intention to find some of the oldest, living Old Ludensians. This is to form part of the school’s preparations ahead of its 475th anniversary of the royal charter that established the school in its home town of Louth, Lincolnshire.

Although the school can trace its roots as far back as 1276, on 21st September 1551, King Edward VI granted a royal charter marking the reformation of the school. On the same day in 2026, the school will come together to celebrate this significant anniversary and, as part of this, would like to invite Old Ludensians (the formal name for alumni of the school) as VIP guests. Vintage Old Ludensians wishing to be part of our celebrations can contact the school using the email [email protected].

“Although we are a forward-thinking, progressive grammar school, we are very proud of our heritage,” stated Sam Cassidy, Headteacher. “It seems only right to include the wider community, particularly former students, in our anniversary celebrations. We look forward to hearing stories from these previous students as they celebrate this significant milestone with us.”

Should prospective parents and students want to find out what the school is like today, they are more than welcome to attend the school’s Open Evening on Thursday 9th July by registering their interest at www.kevigs.org. Older students and their parents may be particularly interested in the school’s new range of post-16 options aimed at providing a broader range of opportunities.

King Edward VI Grammar School, having been founded by royal charter in 1551, is one of the oldest schools in the country. While proud of its heritage and tradition, it has evolved into a forward-thinking grammar school that values not just academic success but also the broader, holistic education of its students. The school prides itself on its ability to equip students with the skills, confidence, and resilience to navigate future challenges.
