In total £8,250 was raised by pupils at Carre’s Grammar School earlier this year, with each year group choosing a different cause.

Key Stage 5 raised £1,100 for Leicester Kidney Patients Association, which presented to Ann Carter from LKPA at a frecent assembly, when she thanked the students for their fund raising efforts.

PE teacher Russell Smith ran the 2015 London Marathon for Children with Cancer UK after putting in 1,200 miles during his 42 weeks of training.

The students helped Mr Smith to raise funds for Children with Cancer UK, via their sponsored walk last year, and helped him to hand over almost £2,500.

On the day, he hobbled over the line after feeling ill along the route. What he didn’t realise was the physical activity had triggered combined with an infection to increase protein in his blood, causing his kidneys to not function properly.

A blood test led to three weeks in intensive care, eventually transferring him to the renal specialists at Leicester General Hospital, where they diagnosed his condition as rhabdomyolysis and saved his life. Following his return to Carre’s, it was suggested that the Sixth Form raise funds via the sponsored walk to recognise the fantastic care Mr Smith received.

Year sevens raised £2,150 for Help for Heroes; Year Eight raised £1,500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust; Year Nine raised £1,400 for Beaumond House in Newark and Key Stage 4 gave £2,100 to Hope House, Newark.
