Lincolnshire Police search for new chief constable

Lincolnshire Police Chief Constable Bill Skelly confirmed in June that he would be retiring in December after 31 years in policing — four of those in Lincolnshire.

According to an advert on the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones’ website, the job will be paid a yearly sa lary of £142,896 — though more could be offered available for an “exceptional candidate”.

In a video on the advert, Mr Jones said: “I’m looking for somebody who has a long-term vision, somebody that wants to be here for the long term to deliver their own strategy to keep our communities safe.

“I want somebody that understands Lincolnshire and understands large rural counties –the challenges that it can bring but equally the opportunities that it can provide.”

Those taking on the role will be asked to “bring a strong, long-term vision and commitment to community focused policing in Lincolnshire.”

Requirements include:

Already being a highly effective chief officer “with breadth and depth of executive leadership”

Being “decisive yet considered in decision-making

Having a proven track record in leading change in a complex environment

According to the advert, applicants will be asked to improve performance, reassure public and ensure the wellbeing of officers.

“We have already done much to achieve savings and efficiencies, within and beyond the organisation but there is still much to do,” said the PCC.

“If you want the exciting challenge of leading Lincolnshire Police to the next level over the next five years and beyond, we look forward to hearing from you.”

Announcing his retirement in June, Mr Skelly said: “It’s been a privilege and an honour to lead this force.

“There have been many challenges during my four years as chief here in Lincolnshire and what I’ve seen is a workforce who constantly rise up and respond to any difficulties put in their path.

“I am proud to have been amongst colleagues who come into work day in, and day out, determined to make a difference and improve the lives of others wherever they can.

“I am absolutely delighted to be finishing a wonderful career at the very top of policing, here in Lincolnshire.”

Prior to Lincolnshire Police, Mr Skelly worked in roles including leading the Immigration Crime Team at New Scotland Yard and being appointed in 2008 by Her Majesty the Queen as her Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland.

Before moving to Lincolnshire he was the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police since 2013.

Mr Skelly also applied to be Scotland’s chief executive just one year into his placement at Lincolnshire — but failed to nab the top spot.
