Police urge Lincolnshire residents to look out for the signs of 'cuckooing'

A particular type of exploitation that targets vulnerable people in their homes is being highlighted by Lincolnshire Police.

Called ‘Cuckooing’ – the illegal activity sees offenders take over someone else's home and use it for drug dealing, storing weapons, facilitating sex work, or exploiting vulnerable individuals for money.

This form of exploitation takes its name from the cuckoo bird – which lays its eggs in other bird’s nests.

“Criminals don't just target properties — they target people,” a force spokesperson said. “Those at risk are often people experiencing isolation, addiction, physical or mental health challenges, financial hardship, or age-related vulnerabilities.

Police have issued the following advice on how to spot the signs of Cuckooing at an address:

• An unusual numbers of visitors, especially late at night

• Unknown people regularly coming and going from an address

• Signs of drug use, anti-social behaviour or other criminal activity

• The resident appearing withdrawn, anxious or fearful

• Changes in routine or a decline in personal care

• Property damage or concerns raised by neighbours

Police say victims of cuckooing may be facing “intimidation, threats, violence and financial abuse”, adding that many “feel trapped and unable to seek help”.

Addressing local residents, the force spokesperson added: “If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts. Reporting concerns could help safeguard someone from exploitation and connect them with the support they need.”
