Fire service warning as households urged to register new appliances to reduce fire risk

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is urging residents to register electrical appliances in a bid to reduce the risk of house fires following the Christmas and Boxing Day shopping period.

With many homes now using new gadgets and kitchen appliances, fire chiefs say registering products could play a vital role in preventing electrical faults from turning into serious fire hazards.

The advice comes as part of Register My Appliance Week, which encourages people to register both new and existing electrical items so manufacturers can quickly contact owners if a product needs a safety repair or is subject to a recall.

Amanda Matson, head of community fire prevention at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said:

“Coming off Christmas, lots of us have new gadgets or appliances in our homes.

“Registering them only takes a few minutes and it means that if something’s wrong you’ll be alerted right away and get it fixed or replaced.

“It’s really simple and it’s a surefire way to keep potentially dangerous electrical items out of your home.”
