Spilsby Town Council has 43 allotments in Hundleby Road and the ones put up for rent are of various sizes.

Bonny Smith says she had an allotment even before taking on the position of town clerk. She said: “I first rented one for recreation reasons after my husband, Geoff, had a heart attack.

“You don’t just have to grow vegetables. In the summer it’s a lovely, peaceful place to relax.

“We have a shed and table and chairs down there and grow things like strawberries, potatoes and beans.

“But you can do what you like with them – have a grassed area and flowers. Some people have benches.

“It’s just a nice place to go.”

The council recently set up a new allotments committee and are currently updating tenancy agreements.

Members are also looking at installing composting toilets, replacing allotment posts and will be putting up a new fence alongside the A16 because the current one has become rotten,

Among the allotments available is a quarter-size plot. Bonny said: “This would be ideal for someone who just wants to grow a few vegetables.

“With spring just around the corner it’s a great opportunity to eat healthily and enjoy the outdoors.”

Anyone interested in taking on an allotment should contact Bonny, who will then organise a site visit.
