'A fantastic display' -- community project creates spectacular 'poppy waterfall'
A spectacular ‘poppy waterfall’ to mark Remembrance Day proved to be a fitting parting gift for Coningsby from the town clerk.
Kathy Roberts retired as clerk of Coningsby Town Council in April before embarking on a project to create the beautiful display of poppies.
She launched an appeal on Facebook for knitted or crocheted poppies, and local people and local groups started to send them in.
Kathy needed 5,000 poppies to complete the project. But incredibly, no fewer than 7,800 were donated – and in the end, 7,300 of them made up the ‘waterfall’, which was installed at the cemetery on Dogdyke Road in Coningsby for residents and visitors to admire.

"It was a fantastic community effort,” said Sarah-Louise Kulwicki, who is the new council clerk.
"Kathy held weekly sessions for people to come and take it in turns stitching the poppies on the ‘waterfall’ material.
"One of the town councillors roped in her family and friends to erect the structure in the cemetery.
“Kathy received more than enough poppies, with the excess used to decorate local planters and to make giant poppies for the cemetery gates.”

The ‘waterfall’ proved to be a highlight of Coningsby’s events to mark Remembrance Day, which included a parade and a service at St Michael’s Church, as residents and visitors commented on the impressive display. All the volunteers who helped Kathy with the project were hailed for giving their time and hard work.
Sarah-Louise added: “Coningsby Town Council would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their time, effort and creativity to make our beautiful ‘poppy waterfall’ possible. It made for a fantastic display in the cemetery on Dogdyke Road.
"To all those who lovingly crafted each poppy – your dedication and care created a stunning tribute that truly honours the spirit of Remembrance.
"A special thankyou also goes to those who helped assemble and arrange the display. Your teamwork and commitment ensured it was ready in time for this important occasion.
"Together, you created a meaningful symbol of respect, gratitude and remembrance for all who served and sacrificed. Thankyou for helping us remember them.”
